Apple's next iPhone: 6 rumored features [Updated]

Redesigned headphones, a 4-inch screen, and credit card-like capabilities are just a few of the goodies reportedly boasted by the tech giant's next handset

The next iteration of Apple's best-selling iPhone will, according to reports, make its long-awaited debut on September 12. The iPhone 5 (if it's even called that) is expected to be the most dramatic redesign of the handset since the curtains were pulled off the iPhone 4 in fall 2010. What kind of new features should consumers expect? Here, seven rumored changes: Best Opinion:  MacRumors, Wired, ZDNet, ...

1. Completely redesigned headphonesThe flimsy white earbuds that come bundled with every iPhone are often criticized for their tinny sound and poor durability. But now, the Vietnamese website Tinhte.vn has published a video (watch it here) of what it claims to be a brand new set of Apple headphones — allegedly obtained from a Foxconn plant in the country. The headphones, which are reportedly more comfortable than the current model, have the appearance of a "horse's head," with a more-streamlined profile and white plastic surrounding the speakers. While we can't vouch for the authenticity of the video, says MacRumorsit's worth noting that this Vietnamese website has a proven track record of obtaining Apple prototypes pre-release.

2. A new metal bodyApple's next iPhone may be be "housed in Liquidmetal," says Christina Bonnington at Wired, "the commercial name for an alloy of titanium, zirconium, nickel, copper, and other metals." The "amorphous" alloy can be poured into a molding like plastic to produce ultra-thin parts. When it hardens, Liquidmetal retains "high strength, high resistance to wear against scratching and denting, and [has] a good strength-to-weight ratio." Cooled, it looks "smooth like liquid," and may bestow the next iPhone "its special swagger." Eh, let's not get too excited, says Adrian Kingsley-Hughes atZDNet. While Liquidmetal is "incredibly tough," it's not great for radio frequencies. Remember Antennagate? Well, we might not have to worry, says Ed Oswald at PC World. Some photos indicate an aluminum back like the kind used on MacBooks. This lightweight, two-tone metal appears to cover 80 percent of the handset's backside, making the shatter-prone iPhone "a little less breakable."

3. A larger screen
The next iPhone may feature a much larger display — possibly 4.6 inches versus its current 3.5-inch set-up — and Apple has already started placing orders to its suppliers, reports Reuters. While that sounds nice, making "a 4.6-inch display would mean that the size of the iPhone itself would be much larger than it currently is," says Jordan Crook at TechCrunch. And that doesn't seem realistic. More likely: Apple is working on a 4-inch display to "fit on to the iPhone at its current size." Keeping the same iPhone size sounds more like an Apple move, says MG Siegler atParislemon. "A device that stays the same size, but gets a slightly larger screen for one more row of apps"? Exciting stuff.

4. Less glassThe current iPhone's touchscreen uses two separate layers to achieve its effect: A touch sensor layer and an LCD display layer, which are stacked on top of each other. But Apple is said to be introducing "in-cell touch panels on its next iPhone," says Josh Ong at Apple Insider, which means the two space-hogging layers will be consolidated into one. (The Wall Street Journal corroborates reports of the skinnier glass.) Not only does integrating touch sensors into the LCD make it thinner, but it also "improves the quality of displayed images." Another plus: The iPhone will run with "vastly lower power consumption," says Kyle Wagner atGizmodo. Fewer lights require less power, which could be a huge boon for the phone's battery life.

5. New connections
Leaked photos make it look like Apple is rearranging its plugs, says Mark Gurman at 9to5 Mac. The earphone jack is being moved to the bottom (an iPhone first), and the device will charge using a much smaller dock connector. Yup, we've "independently verified" that Apple is switching from a 30-pin port to a 19-pin port, says John Biggs at TechCrunch. Three different manufacturers say the port you use to plug your phone into a computer or power outlet will be different than in years past. "This is certainly not going to go over easy," says Chris Burns at Slashgear. Fans collecting third-party accessories for their iPhones and iPads will have to pony up for brand new connections, like HDMI cables and chargers. "Accessory hell, here we come," says PC World's Oswald.
6. 4G LTE... and a better batteryApple already introduced "the high-speed network on its new iPad," says Dave Smith at the International Business Times, which was probably done as a "practice run" for the iPhone. But the main problem with LTE is that it tends to "ravage battery life." If the company wanted it on the iPhone 4S, it would have had to "increase the phone's thickness" to accomodate a larger battery. Now that Apple appears to be shaving off millimeters here and there, the next iPhone could receive the bigger (and better) battery required to handle faster networks.
7. iWallet
On March 6, Apple won a "major patent" for technology called the "iWallet," says IBT's Smith, which allows users "complete control over their subsidiary financial accounts on their iPhones." The technology uses Near-Field Communication to make credit card transactions by holding the device next to a payment console, effectively turning the iPhone into a digital wallet.

10 Things I Love And Hate About My New iPhone 5

I've had my iPhone 5 for just over 4 days now. The experience is great and I'm loving it so far.
Unfortunately, as soon as the device was announced, we all saw the typical reactions of how disappointed people were with the device.
When Apple's designs don't instantly disrupt the market and we don't see a change like the iPhone 3GS to the iPhone 4, each year, tech nerds and savvy consumers are left underwhelmed.
Am I saying the iPhone 5 is a perfect device? Nope. No phone is.
Here's your proof.

Love: The iPhone 5 is insanely fast

Love: The iPhone 5 is insanely fast
Getty Images
First things first. The iPhone 5 is fast. And I'm not just talking about LTE. The phone is significantly
faster than the iPhone 4S and even the new third-generation iPad.
I have push email set up on all three devices. The iPhone 5 consistently alerts me of new emails
two times faster than the new iPad, and 3 times faster than the iPhone 4S.
LTE, the 4G cellular technology that provides data speeds about as fast as your cable DSL
modem, is truly lightning fast. Much faster than my internet at home. The only issue I have with
LTE is that I'm not sure my current data plan will be able to support the faster speeds. I'm gonna
burn right through that 3 GB.

Love: It's insanely light, yet still sturdy

Kim Bhasin / Business Insider
The iPhone 5 weighs in at 3.95 ounces or 112 grams. While this may not seem like much was
removed you can feel it once you pick up the phone.
There have been several times when I've slipped the iPhone 5 into my pocket and forgot it was
there. Despite this weight loss, the phone still feels substantial in my hand.
Its easier to text with one hand, and when I go to text on my iPhone 4S it's noticeably heavier.

Love: The design is striking

Everywhere that the 4S fell short (not too many places) the iPhone 5 steps in.
The iPhone 5's shape isn't too much different from the iPhone 4S, but the refinements are easily
noticeable.
Initially, the aluminum backing feels more fragile than the 4S's glass back. This could be because
the phone is still new so that I am still treating it more delicately, but I've been extremely paranoid about scratching the precious metal.
Aside from the fragility the new glass touchscreen is far more responsive, the FaceTime HD
camera is clearer, and rear camera is more polished.
The buttons feel sturdier, the speaker is louder, calls sound better. The 5 is an improvement in
almost every area.

Love: The screen is actually the perfect size.

Apple put some thought into the size of the phone.
Instead of just giving us a gargantuan screen (I wouldn't have complained), it made the screen
taller. I thought this was foolish until I actually held the iPhone 5 in my hand.
Holding the phone in one hand is still comfortable. I can reach the top of the screen with my thumb
and the bottom of the screen too.
After I saw this ad explaining why they made the phone taller instead of wider it all made sense.
While this is probably just excellent marketing on Apple's part, it does make sense.
See for yourself:

Love: Battery life is drastically improved, for me anyway.

I charged my iPhone 5 yesterday at around 6 p.m.; it was fully charged by 10 p.m.
(could have been sooner but that's just when I checked).
I pulled the 5 off the charger and used it lightly, only to check a few emails and scroll through
Instagram.
I left the phone alone around 11 p.m. (it was still at 100%). When I woke up this morning, the
it was still at 100%. I listened to 3 songs on my subway ride to work, have push notifications turned on for Twitter and Mail, and used it to test Nokia Maps.
My iPhone 5 battery is at 87% at 12:45 p.m. Wow.
As a reference point. I pulled my 4S off the charger at around 7 a.m. and used it very lightly and
 it is currently at 79%.
While this may seem like a hair brained reason for improved battery life, the proof is there.
For me at least.

Now onto a few negatives...

Now onto a few negatives...

Hate: Apple Maps are a step backwards

This is really my biggest gripe with the phone. Maps stink, and there's not clear fix in sight, at least
in the short term. The release of Apple's map seems very uncharacteristic. Apple is a perfectionist, and its weak maps offering shows its Achilles heel.
The maps are laughable. Many of the locations Google has indexed into its excellent service are no
 where to be found.
Apple's Maps has left people lost, turning in the wrong direction, and just frustrated in general.
Despite this huge oversight, I've found a few temporary solutions for you:

Hate: The Lightning Port is making me get all new cords

Hate: The Lightning Port is making me get all new cords
Apple
If anyone wants to take advantage of their older speaker docks, car chargers, and other
accessories, you'll need to replace them with new ones or get that pesky adapter. Major negative.
The Lightning port is ridiculously small. The smaller size allowed Apple to cram more into the
insides of the phone, but the lightning port is an overall fail because now I have to spend even
more money.
Just when I had an iPhone cord in every room of my apartment and my office, I have to go out and
buy a $29 adapter or a brand new $19 cord.

Hate: All my apps weren't ready

This is half Apple's fault and half developers faults.
Because Apple is so secretive, it didn't alert developers in advance of the iPhone 5's release, so
many apps could be optimized for the larger screen in time for launch.
The developers could have guessed that the screen increase was going to happen. There was
evidence in the iOS 6 beta for developers. More preparation on the developers part could have provided a seamless transition from iPhone 4S to iPhone 5 for consumers.
The good news is, I'm sure developers will be able to push out updates quickly
 in the coming weeks.

Hate: Verizon and Sprint models still can't surf and talk.

Hate: Verizon and Sprint models still can't surf and talk.
Jessica Liebman, Business Insider
This isn't really a phone issue, but a carrier issue.
Sprint and Verizon iPhone 5 models can't use voice and data simultaneously. This was a
feature Verizon promised prior to the LTE iPhone, but it turns out that it's not the case.
This is strange because some LTE Android smartphones on Verizon can do simultaneous
talk and surf.

Hate: The aluminum is susceptible to scratches.

Hate: The aluminum is susceptible to scratches.
In tests, some outlets have discovered that the aluminum back of the iPhone 5 is very prone to
scuff marks. Be careful!
So much for that beautiful back standing the test of time.

Overall: Apple delivered on its promises.

Overall: Apple delivered on its promises.
Kevin Smith, Business Insider
Apple promised better battery life, a bigger screen, and a faster phone.
I got all of that.
The phone is ridiculously light and a bit taller, both things I didn't need but appreciate Apple adding.
If you're on the fence about getting an iPhone 5, hop down, and walk to your nearest Apple Store.
You'll find that actually holding the phone is a great way to judge if you should upgrade.
I believe the upgrade is well worth it, especially if you're on an iPhone 4 and below. 4S users
will also notice and appreciate the changes.
Overall, I am pleased with the iPhone 5 and enjoy the refinements. I'm sure that as time goes
on I'll find more things to love and less to complain about but for now,
the iPhone is still the best phone on the market.

Nokia Parking helps you find and pay for a spot, we go hands-on (video)

Parking in Paris is a nightmare. No, it's worse -- it's bad enough to keep you awake at night, worrying that your precious machine will be scratched up or simply missing the next morning. Nokia, at least, is trying to make things a little easier with an upcoming service it's just calling Nokia Parking. It's a comprehensive parking database launching in Europe in November that can not only help you find parking but even help you pay for it once you do. More details, and a video demo, after the break.
Let's get this up there first: despite having this demonstrated on a Windows Phone (a Lumia 800, to be exact) this is not an app that Nokia is introducing. Rather, this is a service that, like so many other aspects of Navteq's business, will be licensed to others and basically blended into other apps. So, while you're unlikely to ever get a Nokia Parking app yourself, you may some day in the not-too-distant future get a parking app from your local municipality which itself is using Nokia Parking in the background.
Got it? Good. Here's how it works in its current guise: using GPS coordinates the service determines all available parking nearby. Parking garages have information about their size represented, including minimum heights that could be problematic if you're of the SUV persuasion. But, even more exciting, the app also tracks, in real-time, available spaces just waiting for you to show off those parallel parking skills that earned you a reluctant smile from the judge on your drivers license test.
The service can also aggregate payment information, so once you're an appropriate distance from the curb you can tap a button on your phone and start paying for the parking spot. Then, when you leave, you can tap another button and your payment is automatically processed -- transparently. Or, if you're using the service on something like a 3G-connected navigation unit in your car, the car itself could automatically start and stop payment parking based on its location.
No more fumbling for change and no more hunting for parking spaces -- in theory. The service launches next month in a few cities across Europe and will be built out quickly after that. When will it come to your town? Well, that largely depends on when some local business wants to partners up with Nokia and develop the necessary services. That, we think, could take awhile.
Steve Dent contributed to this report.

Xi3 goes the crowdfunding route for future X3A, X7A modular PCs (video)

Xi3 goes the crowdfunding route for future X3A, X7A modular PCs
Xi3 has been one of the more inventive PC builders in the field, designing its Modular Computers in the belief that small, more upgradable desktops are the way of the future. The company is planning two new systems to further that dream, the X3A and X7A, but it wants our help: it's running a Kickstarter funding drive until October 28th to assist the development and garner some early adopters. Put down $503 or $603 and you'll get the entry-level X3A, a dual-core 1.65GHz (likely AMD E-450-based) PC with 4GB of RAM, a 32GB SSD and either Linux or Windows installed; splurge with $1,103 or more and you'll get the more performance-driven X7A, which jumps to a quad-core chip with a 3.2GHz peak speed, a Windows-loaded 64GB SSD and faster graphics. Assuming Xi3 makes its target, we should see the X3A and X7A arrive in January and February respectively, with Kickstarter supporters beating the larger herd by a week. Even existing owners are accounted for through a Primary I/O Board upgrade, due before the end of this year, that carries more Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports. Crowdfunding is an unusual approach to buying that next PC, without the certainties of shopping at an online store -- but we're also dealing with an unusual PC from the get-go.

Touch Bionics releases new prosthetic fingers, flips the old ones the bird

Touch Bionics releases new prosthetic fingers, flip the old ones the bird
The only upgrades available for our puny human hands are gaming controller calluses, but if you're sporting an i-LIMB digits hand prosthesis, you can now grab a set of improved fingers. Touch Bionics'"smaller, lighter and more anatomically accurate" appendages are now available worldwide, as well as a new wrist-band unit which houses all the necessary computing power and juice for their function. Best of all, these developments allow more people to adopt the tech than the previous generation, including those with more petite hands or finger amputations closer to the knuckle. We don't know how much it'll cost for a fresh set, but we'll let health agencies and insurance companies deal with that part. With these upgrades and RSL Steeper's latest offering, it won't be long before our flesh-based variants are meager in comparison.

Logitech promises continued support for Squeezebox, says it won't force a switch to UE Smart Radio

Logitech promises continued support for Squeezebox, says it won't force a switch to UE Smart Radio
With Logitech's Squeezebox platform having quietly and unexpectedly reached its EOL status, the company found it necessary to let its customers know where they stand going forward. In a very detailed letter from UE product director Ariel Fischer, the Harmony maker reassured current Squeezebox owners it will continue to offer support for these products, adding that the current "mysqueezebox" website and certain apps will still work with existing devices. What's more, those who managed to snag one of those Squeezebox Radios will have the option to upgrade to the outfit's new UE Smart Radioservice -- which, according to Logitech, can play nicely alongside existing Squeezebox products, though this "will operate and be controlled separately." All in all, it could be worse -- and, in age where customer service can sometimes be rather unpleasant, we're sure most of us can appreciate the transparency being shown in the open letter. Speaking of which, you'll find that at the source link below.
